Carson City, Nevada
Named after Kit Carson, Carson
city boomed in 1859. Soon it was elected as the territorial capital,
and the made the hotel into the town jail. Timber was ripped out
of the hills and sent down gigantic water flumes to hold up mine
shaft. The beams were loaded onto
railroad flatcars and rolled off
to Silver City, Gold Hill and Virginia City via the new Virginia and Truckee
railroad.
Fast forward to today. The rocks used for many
buildings have long since been hauled off to build Napa valley
wineries, but dozens have survived and are preserved as historic
landmarks.
You can visit the Nevada State museum for a
fascinating look at frontier life, railroad and mining triumphs
of the past or even experience a working vintage locomotive. Or
follow the Kit Carson trail through one of the largest historic
residential districts in the west, passing turn-of-the-century
mansions, courthouses, a depot...even a brewery
The fun never stops at casinos,
