Thunderbird Lodge Historic Site

Considered one of the best examples of the kinds of spectacular homes and retreats rich San Francisco businessmen built on Lake Tahoe early in the 20th century, Thunderbird Lodge has been preserved carefully by multiple owners. The original builder George”Captain”
Whittell had big plans to develop the land into a huge casino and resort, but ended up just living privately in the home he had built. In addition to the main house, there’s a Card House, Caretaker's Cottage, the Cook/Butler's House, an elephant garage (don’t ask!) the Admiral's House, the Boathouse with adjoining 600' tunnel, and Gatehouse.

The Thunderbird Lodge was intentionally designed and crafted to fit in with its surroundings in a way that harmonized with nature.
